Every child who walks through our doors carries something we cannot see. Some bring confidence. Some bring fear. Some bring excitement. Some bring burdens no one else knows about.
Before a single lesson is taught or a single assignment is graded, we have a chance to do something more important: help that child believe they matter.
At Our Lady of the Lake, we try never to assume we know the whole story. Instead, we choose patience, compassion, and hope, recognizing that every student arrives with their own gifts and their own struggles, and that our job is to make room for both.
This week, that showed up in a small way. A teacher noticed a usually talkative student had gone quiet for a few days. Rather than waiting to see if it passed, she pulled him aside, not to ask about missing homework, but just to ask how he was doing. It turned out something had changed at home. That one conversation, five minutes long, told him what we want every child at OLL to know: someone here is paying attention, and someone here believes in you.
That is what this looks like in practice. We learn names quickly. We notice when something shifts. We protect every child’s dignity, and we celebrate growth as much as we celebrate achievement.
Because every child deserves at least one adult who never stops believing in them. That is the OLL Way.
