The OLL Way: From Compliance to Formation
For a long time, a Catholic school’s identity got measured by what could be checked off: Mass attendance, uniform compliance, prayers recited correctly. Those things still matter. But at Our Lady of the Lake, we’ve been asking a different question: are we forming the whole child, or just managing behavior?
That question is at the heart of the OLL Way, built around three words: Invite, Live, and Journey.
Invite asks how a student knows they belong here, before they’ve proven anything, earned anything, or gotten anything right. Live asks what students learn about Catholic life simply by watching the adults around them, since faith is caught as much as it’s taught. Journey asks how we help a student grow, rather than just complete the work in front of them.
This is a shift from compliance to formation. A student who follows every rule but never feels invited in hasn’t been formed; they’ve been managed. A teacher who models grace under pressure teaches more than any religion lesson on the schedule that day. A struggling student who gets help seeing their own growth learns something no worksheet can give them.
This week, that shift showed up in something small. A teacher noticed a student who’d been quiet and withdrawn all week, not falling behind academically, just not quite present. Instead of waiting for a grade to reveal a problem, she pulled him aside after class, just to ask how he was doing. He opened up about something going on at home. That’s Invite in action: paying attention to the person before the performance.
That’s the direction we’re moving in at OLL, and across Catholic education more broadly. Not away from faith or rigor, but toward a model where both are lived out in how we treat people, not just in what we require of them.
That is the OLL Way.
