We’ve all had those mornings.

Someone can’t find a shoe. The water bottle is still on the counter. A lunch needs to be packed. Someone suddenly remembers they need something for school… as you’re already walking out the door.

Morning chaos happens! But creating a routine that gets your Laker to school on time can make a BIG difference in how they start their day.

At Our Lady of the Lake School, we want every student walking through our doors feeling calm, confident, prepared, and ready to learn, and that starts with arriving on time!

Why Being on Time Matters

The first few minutes of the school day are more important than they may seem.

Students are getting settled, unpacking, greeting their teachers and friends, hearing important announcements and directions, and transitioning into “school mode.”

When a student arrives late, even by just a few minutes, they’re walking into a classroom where the day has already started. They may miss directions, morning routines, announcements and prayers, or the beginning of a lesson. Instead of starting the day alongside their classmates, they’re immediately trying to catch up.

And those minutes add up.

Being on time also teaches something that goes far beyond academics: responsibility. Building good habits around schedules, preparation, and punctuality now helps our Lakers develop skills they’ll carry with them into high school, college, careers, and beyond.

Let’s Make Mornings Easier!

Getting an entire family out the door is no small accomplishment, so here are a few tricks that may help make mornings a little less hectic:

Do the “night-before check.”
Backpack? Packed. Uniform? Ready. Lunch? Prepped. Shoes? Located! Taking care of the little things at night means fewer surprises in the morning.

Set a LEAVE time — not just an arrival time.
Figure out what time your family needs to be pulling out of the driveway and make that the morning deadline. It’s much easier than realizing everyone should already be in the car!

Build in a buffer.
Traffic happens. Shoes disappear. Water bottles get forgotten. Give yourself an extra 10–15 minutes whenever possible so one little hiccup doesn’t derail the whole morning.

Keep the routine consistent.
Wake up, get dressed, eat breakfast, brush teeth, grab your things, and go! When children know exactly what comes next, mornings can run much more smoothly.

Try a morning checklist.
Especially for younger Lakers, a simple checklist can help them become more independent:

Get Dressed → Eat Breakfast → Brush Teeth → Backpack & Lunch → Shoes On → GO!

Give your Laker some responsibility.
Children can help! Younger students can make sure their backpack is by the door, while older students can check their schedules, pack their bags, set alarms, and make sure they have everything they need for the next day.

Ready, Set… Beat the Bell!

Of course, nobody has a perfect morning every day. There will be traffic jams, alarm-clock mishaps, missing homework, and mornings when everything seems determined to slow you down.

The goal isn’t perfection, it’s creating a habit.

When our students arrive on time, they get to begin their day alongside their classmates, participate in the full morning routine, and start learning from the very beginning.

And when families and school work together to make punctuality a priority, we’re teaching our students something important:

Your education matters. Your responsibilities matter. And showing up ready to give your best matters.

So tonight, find those shoes, pack those backpacks, set those alarms, and give yourself a few extra minutes tomorrow morning.

Let’s Beat the Bell, Lakers!
